So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. (Genesis 3:6)
Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. And she had an Egyptian maidservant whose name was Hagar. So Sarai said to Abram, “See now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing children. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall obtain children by her.” And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai. (Gen 16:1-2)
Some might say that when men listen to their wives, they end up in a mess…
Adam listened to Eve, ate of the fruit and partnered in bringing the entry of sin to the world.
Abram ‘heeded the voice of Sarai,’ took Hagar as his wife, which resulted in lots of trouble at home and the birth of a ‘seed’ that would be a ‘wild-man,’ whose hand would be ‘against every man’ and be the birthing of the Arab nation.
So, is it right to say that men shouldn’t listen to their wives? Careful here… I don’t think that is the lesson… it’s not what they did, it’s what they didn’t do. They didn’t talk to the Lord after talking to their wives. This is essential… seeking the Lord and His will and giving Him the last word is the best pathway.
As Jeremiah said, Please, obey the voice of the LORD which I speak to you. So it shall be well with you, and your soul shall live (Jeremiah 38:20)
